Dual Display Smartphone.... Twice The Fun !!!

Every once in a while, we tend to get into debates over which Smartphone has the best set of features, the best camera, Android, iOS or Symbian and then you finally hear the line “Yeah, but this one has a bigger screen”!!! A company called Imerj has decided to help you counter this argument once and for all by announcing its soon to be expected Dual Screen Smartphone!!!

Rumored to be named “MORE”, the company claims that the new Smartphone fits its name perfectly. Designed with true multitasking in mind, the phone houses two separate 4” AMOLED touchscreens that can be viewed side by side or folded up like an inside out book for portability. Apart from the Dual Screen WOW factor, the phone contains some other very decent specs. It is supposedly powered by a new processor from Texas Instruments, has a full 1GB of DDR3 RAM, a 5MP camera capable of 720p HD video recording and a 1750mAh battery to power up the two decent sized screens. The phone runs Android with an interface tweaked to take advantage of the dual screen setup and will also support the standard set of applications.

Besides giving the user endless bragging rights, the phone will be able to exploit quite a few new and creative uses for the device. The device surely looks promising and we will just have to wait and see where this trend heads in the near future. No exact date for availability has been announced yet but Imerj claims that the phone will be put into production. Here is the official video released by Imerj praising their gadget…. Enjoy !!!

Quick Tip... How To Save A Wet Gadget !!!

It is quite obvious that gadgets that are not made to work under water should simply not be submerged into the liquid. But sadly this little known fact does not stop accidents from happening all too often. There is however hope, if you find your digital camera, cell phone or other tech device unintentionally physically associated with H2O.

The first thing that you should do is remove the battery from the device. If your device does not have a removable battery, the first thing you should do is quickly get on your knees and start praying. Once the battery is removed however (and even if you can’t remove the battery in your case), you should wait for as long as it takes for the device to dry up before you try to power it on again. After waiting a sufficient amount of time, use a towel to dry the battery and the battery compartment completely before reinserting the battery back in and powering on the device. If the battery or the device is still wet, chances of short circuit increase dramatically.

In any case, and regardless of how tempting it may seem to you, do not use an external heat source such as a hair dryer, heater, stove or a microwave to dry out your device. It may only help in frying your circuits and your device will be in worse shape that it initially was. Air drying your gadget is pretty much the only option so be patient. If lady luck is on your side, you may just end up saving your gadget from an untimely demise. Good Luck !!!

Nokia Connection 2011.... Cool New Gadgets !!!

Apple had its WWDC, Google had its Google I/O and Nokia just got through with its Nokia Connection 2011. Nokia has been going through quite a few ups and downs with declining market share, the new alliance with Microsoft and some recently released subpar cell phones. But with some interesting announcements in this year’s Nokia Connection, it seems like that Nokia might be on the right path to pulling itself together. There were quite a few announcements that Nokia made, so let’s get right to them.

Symbian Anna

The latest OS that Nokia had been flaunting with not too much success until recently was the Symbian ^3 OS. Symbian Anna is the first major update to the Symbian ^3 OS which includes some dramatic changes and improvements in relating to homescreen, web browser, redesigned icons and modified interface, portrait QWERTY keypad on touchscreens and better Ovi Maps. Nokia has claimed that starting July, all major Symbian ^3 phones will come with Symbian Anna pre-installed, and the ones already out will receive it through software updates.

Nokia N9

The handset that has been creating the most hype is quite interesting. The first interesting thing about this phone announced at Nokia Connection 2011 is that it does not run Symbian but is rather a MeeGo OS smartphone. Unlike the N900 however, this one has all the right moves. Housing a modern day 1GHz A8 Cortex processor with 1GB of RAM this seems to be a decent enough Smartphone. Other great features include a 3.9” AMOLED display covered in Gorilla Glass, An 8MP camera with Auto-focus and LED Flash capable of HD video recording as well. A pretty attractive Polycarbonate body and to top it all off, this phone contains a NFC chip which will open up a new world of possibilities for it. We will be doing an extensive review soon.

Nokia C2-02, C2-03 and C2-06

Along the budget handset lines, Nokia announced this very similar trio. Nokia has been experimenting with the Dual SIM feature and the C2-03 improves on Nokia’s previous efforts. It is capable of handling two SIM cards and has a very useful ability to hot-swap SIM cards without restarting the phone. The phone also allows you to save preferences of up to 5 different SIM cards. Next among features is the combination of the touch and type. Although this is not a new concept for Nokia, the upgrades to the Symbian S40 take full advantage of this combination in this budget non-smartphone category. The phone is also loaded with other standard features such as a 2MP camera, expandable memory card slot and the like. With pricing at the lower end, this seems to be a good value for money phone.

The other two variants are essentially the same phone but with a few minor tweaks. The Nokia C2-02 only omits the Dual SIM feature but keeps the rest of the bells and whistles, whereas the C2-06 comes in a variety of flamboyant colors.

Nokia Accessories

Nokia also decided to improve on its peripherals lineup as well. Sure Nokia has been known for great reliable phones, but they also tend to put those features into their accessories as well. During Nokia Connection 2011, Nokia announced three noteworthy and supposedly cool accessories. Although all have two things in common, they are all geared towards music playback (a market Nokia is hoping to penetrate further) and they all have Bluetooth capabilities. The set of accessories, now aptly called Nokia Gear contained these gadgets….

Nokia Bluetooth Stereo Headset BH-111

Nokia Play 360 Portable Speaker

Nokia Wireless Music Receiver MD-310

But rather than going into detail about each and every one of these accessories, we decided to let Nokia itself do the explaining. Be sure to check out the attached videos by Nokia

Playstation VITA.... The Super PSP !!!

Yes we admit that Sony has been going through hell with its online gaming related data leaks, potential lawsuits and bad press, but you have to hand it over to Sony for one thing, they make remarkable gaming consoles, period. From the very beginning when the Sony Playstation came out right up until the latest variant, the Blu-Ray flaunting PS3 Sony has been on top of its game. Sure there have been hiccups along the way when the Playstation Move didn’t get as much attention as the Xbox Kinect, when Wii for a brief period outsold the PS3 and the like but Sony still remains king of the gaming console.

If you are one of those people that have had a lot to do with video games in their lifestyle, you are no stranger to Sony products. If you are one of those avid gamers that have to have a video game with them wherever they go, Sony had also answered your prayers in the past with their very good portable gaming system called the Playstation Portable (PSP). Yes, the PSP has been a very hot commodity in gamers young and old all across the globe and rightfully so; the portable system is quite the gadget and does a number of things well. Carrying the success of the PSP forward, Sony came up with different successors or alternatives, some in the form of upgrades and one in the form of a Smartphone cum PSP called the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play. All the upgrades were interesting, but none of them was really mind blowing. Well…… Until Sony just recently announced the Playstation Vita !!!

Any and everything that you liked about the PSP is supposedly made better with the Vita. Expected to be released around October 2011, the Playstation Vita or PSVita has a huge list of truly great features that will surely make it a must have gadget for all the portable gaming enthusiasts out there.

To start off, the screen now is an OLED screen which will be an improvement over a screen that is already very decent. The device will now house two analog joysticks, one on each side, to make the controls resemble those of a full blown Playstation controller. And now this is where things get better: To further enhance the gameplay, Sony has included its proprietary 6-Axis gyroscopic sensor for motion based gameplay. This is supposedly better in comparison to the iPhone 4 and iPad 2’s gyro sensor. The new screen is actually a touchscreen with multi-touch capabilities. In addition, the back panel of the PSVita is a platform that can be used as a secondary multi-touch touchpad for enhanced gameplay. Yes, it has touch capabilities on both the front and the back!!!

Want some more?? Well you asked for it…. The device now has TWO CAMERAS, a front-facing and a rear facing camera for both pictures and video. Needless to say, the device has a built-in microphone now that will surely aid you in your online gameplay as a com device. While we are on the topic of online gameplay, the PSVita will now have not only Wifi capabilities but also 3G capabilities and an on-board GPS receiver as well. It might not be too far-fetched an idea to say that this could actually substitute for a decent portable tablet.

To top it all off, the device will support a stronger gaming engine for more advanced and better looking games. In all honesty, I can’t wait for this to come out. Speculations have been around that the device will carry a hefty price tag but that is to be expected from something this good anyway. To visually aid your excitement, attached below is a video from Sony Inc. highlighting the device and some of the games for it. Enjoy.

Hollywood Tech.... Cool Phones In Movies !!!

Yes we love our tech, and we love our movies as well. Often times the theme of some pretty decent Hollywood movies revolves around technology. How Hollywood chooses to twist it, is however totally up to them. You can have the super futuristic movies like Star Trek and then you can have somewhat believable movies like Swordfish both revolving around one or the other level of technology.

One thing that Hollywood really deserves credit for is subtly integrating technology and gadgets into many of their movies. Some of these gadgets go unnoticed while others become the talk of the town. I’ve watched my fair share of movies and I decided that a list of such gadgets is in order. I could only recall few, but you are more than welcome to add to the list as you please. This ladies and gentlemen is about super cool and highly desirable cell phones used in Hollywood movies.

The disclaimer here is that although some of these phones or variants of some of these phones are available in the market, this post if more for entertainment purposes only where you can enjoy the creativity that cell phone manufacturers and Hollywood film makers alike inject into their movies.

James Bond: Tomorrow Never Dies

I had to start off with this phone. Supposedly built by Ericsson before it was Sony Ericsson and modified by the British Secret Service, this phone had the awesome capability to remotely drive James Bond’s BMW 7 Series through raging gun fire.

The Matrix Reloaded

Samsung made this special prototype phone specifically for the movie where Neo and his gang pop it open to communicate with the mother ship in the real world. Just saying this sentence makes it seem like a handful. The phone actually made it into a very limited production but didn’t see much success because of its bulkiness, lack of options and high price tag.

Transporter 2

Jason Statham the super cool getaway driver has a couple of these gorgeous babies in the dashboard of his car in the movie. This was an actual production phone that fell into the same exquisite category of expensive phones along the lines of the Nokia 8800 series. It was called the 8910 and had monochrome and colored screen variants.

Zoolander

Ok, this one was really far from what the truth could be. Male Supermodel Derek Zoolander (Ben Stiller) rocks this super tiny cell phone that is not much bigger than a thumbnail. God only knows how dials calls with this little (and I do mean little) baby.

Get Smart

This movie had two variants and so did the phone, but is perhaps one of the most recalled spy phones in the history of Hollywood. The phone that secret agent Smart has is housed in the sole of his shoe, further giving a comical touch to the already funny movie. Needless to say, the phone never was put into production.

Batman Begins

The phone used in the movie is perhaps just about as cool as the movie itself. How do I know? Well the phone was put into production, sold more than a million units and was also used by yours truly for quite a while. The phone is a Nokia 5800 and I stand behind the fact that it is a great phone overall although the real phone didn’t house the uber-cool sonar system that Batman’s phone has.

Cellular

The phone was a Nokia 6600. It was a decent phone in its time but why does it deserve a mention in this post? Well as it stands pretty much the whole movie revolves around the phone and in the end it happens to sacrifice itself while saving the life of a kidnapped poor women.

MiLi Power Projector..... iPhone's 70" Screen !!!

Love them or hate them, Apple products are here to stay. Apple has had the reputation of releasing gadgets that are very prone to becoming the talk of the town very quickly and sometimes even before they are released. A lot of the success of Apple products has to do with the gadgets themselves with their thought out design and functionality, and yet a lot of the success can be attributed to the accessories that are available for them.

Take any Apple product be it any kind of iPod, iPhone, iPad or a Mac, the market is flooded with Apple’s own and third party accessories for it. The availability of such products and the flexibility and possibilities of expansion they offer are quite intriguing. And if you consider the rate at which manufacturers churn out new accessories everyday for Apple products, it becomes really hard to pick just one absolute must have accessory. Keeping that in mind, I simply am not going to try and do that, but the gadget I will be discussing today has to be a very interesting accessory for your iPod or iPhone to say the least. The accessory is called the MiLi Power Projector 2 and it is a mini projector for your iPod or iPhone !!!

Sure the new iPhones and the iPod Touch players have gorgeous screens and are in their own way very good multimedia players, but the fact remains that unless Apple makes some drastic changes to the new iPhone (highly unlikely according to rumors), you are still stuck with 3.5” of screen real estate. And regardless of how many pixels Apple tries to cram into that Retina display, you the images displayed are not going to get any bigger. This is where the MiLi Power Projector comes in, to give you the option of upto 70” of real estate to display your iDevice content.

Micro or Pico projectors are not really a brand new phenomenon, but the reason this one particularly caught my eye was because of its design. The MiLi Power Projector has a built-in iPod dock, on which your iPod or iPhone can rest seamlessly while being hooked up to the projector. The picture quality is above average in the Pico category and this little gadget gives you up to 2.5 hours of battery life. The device also comes with an on-board speaker that is considerable louder than the iPhone’s speaker but don’t expect miracles. It is also a walk in the park to set it up, just charge it through micro-USB, pop open the kick stand, place it on a flat surface, hook up your iDevice and you are good to go.

Although this device may be pretty tempting at first glance, you have to keep in mind that there are still a few drawbacks. First and foremost, the device is not cheap, but that shouldn’t be a surprise considering the history of devices compatible with Apple products. Secondly, the availability in Pakistan may also be limited. You also have to consider that this is no HD projector with a gazillion lumens of brightness and you have to use thie projector in pretty much a dark room. Additionally, even though MiLi claims a screen size of up to 70”, the best quality tops out at about 40”, which is still a decent enough size for what you may be trying to achieve. Finally, the resolution tops out at VGA so don’t expect pixel perfect HD quality, but that has to be expected from a current day Pico projector anyway.

Overall, the device is something pretty interesting and could provide you with loads of possibilities in terms of how you want to use your iPod or iPhone and in what way you would want to impress your peers. Also considering its very portable size, you can pretty much have it handy for whenever you want to pull it out and show off. Whether you really want this device and are you able to justify the high price tag are decisions that are totally left on you however.
