Sony Tablets.... Hope To Deliver A One-Two Punch !!!

A few days back, in my post “Sony Ericsson… Not To Be Ignored”, I highlighted the developments and achievements that Sony Ericsson have been able to reach with their new Xperia line of Smartphones. What people may not realize is that, this great lineup was hardly a surprise. Sony, whether acting solo or in coordination with anyone else, has been known the world over for great consumer electronics. This is the same company that came up with the Walkman, the product that started the portable music player revolution; It is the same company that makes some of the best televisions in the world; It introduced the Blu-Ray format that is the standard of High-Definition media; It makes a highly desirable line of laptops named “Vaio”; And it has produced the hottest selling video game console lineup ever… The Playstation !!!

So it is safe to assume that if Sony enters a new category in the world of consumer electronics, the chances are strong that it will not disappoint. Behold Sony jumps into the arena of portable Tablets!! The official announcement came this month when during a press event, Sony unveiled not one but two new tablets scheduled to be released this year. Code named the S1 and the S2, the tablets are in the final phase of development and should be available to the consumers in the near future.

Although Sony did not unveil too many details about the very attractive looking tablets, there are few hardware and software specifications that are now known. First and foremost, keeping in mind the potential and the popularity of the software, Sony has also decided to go with Android. The version that the tablets are expected to run is Android 3.0 Honeycomb which is claimed to be developed specifically for devices with larger screens (i.e tablets).

The first tablet called the S1 follows somewhat of a conventional design. Sony has however redesigned the tablet to make it thicker on one side which supposedly makes it easier to hold. Sony claims that Inspiration came from holding a folded magazine with one hand, the thicker end with the folded side tends to provide better grip. The S1 houses a 9.4” Capacitive screen. The details of the resolution and whether it will be an LCD, S-LCD, LED or OLED screen are still unknown. What is known is that the S1 is very light and users with first-hand experience have claimed that it was very easy to hold.

The S2 tablet is the second tablet and with this one, convention takes a back seat. The design is more along the lines of a book than that of a slate. The S2 houses two 5.5” screens and the tablet opens or closes through a hinge. The bottom of both the sides of the S2 is curved and once again, claims of easy-to-handle have been made. The foldable design and the size of the S2 make it easy to carry in a coat pocket or a purse. The new design will give way to more possibilities that conventional tablets have not yet been able to exploit. The possibility of viewing different content on the two different screens is what Sony has highlighted with the S2.

A new design and the Sony logo do not however make a revolutionary product by themselves. All manufacturers entering the tablet market with their Android gadgets have to keep in mind the presence of the ever-so-popular iPad. Therefore in order to deter consumers from simply purchasing the iPad Sony must have thought of some differentiating factors. Well, as things stand, Sony surely has!!!

More so than Apple, Sony is in a better place to provide consumers with a fully integrated experience where all their devices work in harmony. A home where your TV is connected to your PC is connected to your Media Server is connected to your Music Device is connected to your Game Console… well you get the point. Sony is able to offer a larger variety of consumer electronic products and is involved in many categories from PCs to TVs to Gaming Consoles. What Sony aims to do is integrate all these to work in coordination over a standardized platform. With the new tablets, Sony will provide media sharing capabilities to stream media to and from the tablets to other devices wirelessly. Music and photo sharing will be supported in the same manner, making the Sony tablets part of the synchronized home network. Finally, the integration of the Bravia Mobile engine into the tablets will allow them to produce great colors and image quality to be output to HD televisions. Heck, Sony even plans to provide an infrared sensor to turn your tablet into a universal remote for all your devices.

A few days back, Sony Ericsson had also released the Xperia Play Smartphone that was capable of Playstation level gameplay. With the Sony tablets, the same path has been taken. Although not pure gaming devices, the addition of Playstaion gameplay support will be a welcomed addition and will surely give Sony an edge in terms of rivaling iPad’s gameplay. One more thing worth mentioning is that the S2 with its dual screens provides for an interesting format for gameplay where one screen will turn into a touchscreen gamepad with the other displaying the game. It sounds like an interesting take on gameplay but only time will tell how far these features take the Sony Tablets.

Sony does not skimp on the expected hardware and software specifications with dual core processors, front and rear cameras, ample on-board memory and Wifi + 3G/4G capabilities. This however does not differentiate the tablets from the competition significantly. Sony’s success will depend upon how the brand and the added features are used in a combo to step out of the shadows of an increasingly competitive market. Sony still has a little bit of time to make final tweaks before release and how what is received then and how it is received…. Only time will tell.

Dual Core Smartphones.... Make Way For The Big Dogs !!!

Not too long ago, all the hype in the world of Smartphones was about touchscreens, it then became a battle for the highest resolution primary camera, then came the duel for bigger and brighter displays and then competition amongst the major manufacturers took a turn towards achieving the highest processor clock speeds. What is interesting however is the fact that the end result of all these battles stuck, because now you hardly consider a Smartphone worthy without a fast processor powering a large touchscreen display that can exhibit the high quality pictures you took from the on-board camera.

The world of tech is fast changing and before I get done writing and posting this, I would already be clouded with doubts about this being out of date. Well, I don’t mean that literally but you do get the point. But as the title suggests, and you probably get the gist by now, this article is about an up and coming development in the world of Smartphones that is bound to send the manufacturers into fierce competition mode once again. The hottest battle to ensue will be the one of DUAL CORE PROCESSORS!!!

As mobile operating systems grow more and more sophisticated, it is expected that their need for more and more powerful processors is bound to grow. In an attempt to exceed the pack, certain manufacturers have started adapting this next generation of mobile processors. It is however notable that more so than the requirements of the software, the new technology is being installed into Smartphones for bragging rights. High-powered, expensive, mammoth touchscreen devices that manufacturers claim may be powerful enough to replace your notebook computers, has become the benchmark for new flagship phones.

Although slowly but surely, almost all major manufacturers will succumb to the market demand and release a dual-core smartphone, there are at this point a handful of manufacturers that have taken the leap. Before we get into a quick overview of what are the available options, here are some side benefits that come strapped along with dual-core processors:

  • ·     Smoother Operation Without Lag
  • ·         Enough Power To Support 1080p Full HD Video Capture
  • ·         True Multitasking
  • ·         On-Board Video Editing
  • ·         More Advanced Apps and Games
  • ·         Future Proofing
  • ·         Bragging Rights

Surely the addition of dual-core processors is not just a marketing ploy; the powerful processors do provide benefits of allowing software to exploit its potential. The software however, just like with computers a few years back, will be playing catch-up to the hardware. It will still be a while before mainstream software is tweaked enough to utilize dual-core processing seamlessly. Despite this drawback, you can rest assured that a dual-core Smartphone won’t become outdated too soon. Here are some of the noteworthy models that are now available:

SAMSUNG GALAXY S II

A successor to the already very good Galaxy S Smartphones, this phone is expected to be released in May, 2011. From what I’ve read and researched, the Galaxy S II will stand to be the top-dog in the dual-core arena. With a supercharged dual-core processor clocked at 1.2Ghz and a full 1 GB of RAM, there will be no shortage of power. Additionally improvements worth mentioning will include an improved version of a 4.3” Super AMOLED screen and a 8MP Camera capable of recording full-HD video as expected. When this phone hits the market, expect a premium price tag, which will eventually come down once more and more competitors start releasing their respective versions.

LG OPTIMUS 2X

LG may not be the top name amongst phone users in Pakistan but credit is to be given where it is due. Even though the Samsung Galaxy S II seems like a more powerful option, the fact remains that it is yet to be released. LG was one of the first movers to release a dual-core phone which it has powered with a ARM Cortex A9 processor. Initial research and reviews reveal that in terms of features, performance and appeal, the LG Optimus 2X is not to be discounted and should be considered a very worthy phone. The price difference between the Galaxy S II and the Optimus 2X should become a factor not to be overlooked. Also if you consider the advancement that LG has shown with its very worthy LG G-Slate 3D tablet (Click Here for Overview), you can expect a very decent phone in the Optimus 2X.

MOTOROLA ATRIX

One of the very first in the arena, Motorola chose to market the Atrix primarily on its processing power. So much so that Motorola has claimed that the ATRIX is powerful enough to be considered a laptop replacement. Motorola even released a Laptop style dock which allowed you to use the processor the Atrix with a regular laptop style keyboard and screen. The phone however has lacked the expected improvements such as a higher resolution camera than its predecessors and still only records video in 720p resolution despite the increased processing power and capability. There may be a possibility of improvements in the latter drawback through software updates but that is still unconfirmed. The phone however still possesses more processing power that most single-core Smartphones out there but the decision of buying one rests solely on the user’s discretion.

White iPhone 4... Fashionably Late !!!

If you Google the term iPhone 4, you get more than 262 Million hits, similarly if you Google the term White iPhone 4 you get more than 74.4 Million hits!!! This number is bound to support one fact: The iPhone 4 attracts a LOT of attention.

Anytime Apple or a renowned authority on anything iPhone related makes an announcement, it is sure to make headlines in the tech world. One such announcement has been on the tech world’s radar for quite a while now. Following many speculations, rumors and false confirmations, since the time the iPhone 4 was released, it has now been allegedly confirmed that the WHITE variant of the iPhone 4 is finally scheduled to be released.

Apple has been notorious in its marketing tactics from the early days, always making the consumer wait for a highly anticipated product or gadget. Resting on the ideology that “good things come to those who wait”, Apple has often been accused of saving the best for later. Although many sources have associated the delayed release of the White iPhone 4 with various different reasons, the marketing ploy is claimed to be one of them. Another very popular version has been that Apple had not been able figure out the nitty gritties of the manufacturing up until now. Well, whatever the actual truth, the good news is that Apple has now finally decided not to keep its anxious consumers waiting any longer.

The first and only carrier to claim that it will be selling white versions of the iPhone 4 is Vodafone UK. At this time this denotes that there will still be a serious shortage of the White iPhones in the global market unless other major carriers quickly follow suit. This also implies that consumers in Pakistan will surely have to pay a premium to acquire one as an early adapter.

Also one thing to keep in mind is that now a lot more altered iPhones with their casings replaced with generic white versions will be sold as original. So if you find yourself attracted to the white variant and are planning on purchasing one after release, please be mindful of the knockoff versions and purchase one only after careful inspection and from a trustworthy seller. These counterfeit versions have been selling in Pakistan for quite some time now and the quality knockoffs will be hard to spot.

In any case, the appeal of a hard to acquire white iPhone 4 will be higher than the standard model and to some worth the wait and the extra premium. The reality of how the iPhone consumer market responds will be known next week when the phones are actually released and verdict on whether the wait was worth it will strictly be a judgment call.

LG G-Slate 3D for T-Mobile..... A New Dimension in Tablets !!!

Just yesterday I read the news and I was sad and excited at the same time. Sad because the status I have up on Facebook reads “Enjoying my new iPad so much, can’t get myself to put it down” and is not even three days old. But I guess my intense commitment to the iPad was meant to be short lived, because there is something out there now that made me so much more excited. A certain tech company called LG (Im sure you’ve heard the name) just released in partnership with T-Mobile USA a brand new tablet which I think would give the iPad a run for its money.

Numerous companies in the past made this claim, including Samsung with their Galaxy Tab, Motorola with its Xoom and most recently RIM with its Blackberry Playbook, but for the most part, the iPad has reigned supreme. So what makes me think that a company like LG, which is not very highly appreciated for its Smartphones in the global sense, beat the “iPad King” at its own game?? Well… A New Dimension!!!

The brand new tablet is called “LG G-Slate 3D” and as the name suggests, the highlight is that LG has brought 3D to the world of tablets. Not only does this device let you view content in 3D on its 8.9” 3D LCD screen, it lets you capture 3D images and record 3D video in High Definition!!!

Keeping in mind that if I continue this way, I will have an abundance of exclamation marks highlighting every aspect of the tablet, let’s just do a little head to head comparison with the iPad to see whether it is worth your time and money:

- The G-Slate has already established supremacy in the regard that it is the first good 3D tablet out there, the 8.9” 3D LCD is not much smaller than the 9.7” display on the iPad 2 and to top it off, the G-Slate supports a proper widescreen orientation for better movie watching.

- The G-Slate has three cameras (YES THREE), with two 5MP snappers on the back to aid in 3D photography and 3D video recording and a 2MP front facing camera. The rear cameras come with an LED flash as well. The cameras on the back and the front of the iPad 2 support 0.7MP and VGA resolutions respectively and with no LED flash

- Sure the rear camera on the iPad 2 records 720p HD video but it is trumped by the rear cameras of the G-Slate which shoot 1080p Full HD video in 2D and 720p HD video in 3D

- The processors go head to head with both the iPad 2 and the G-Slate toting 1GHz dual core processors.

- The iPad 2 comes with a choice of 16/32/64 GB internal storage choices, while the G-Slate comes with a standard 32GB storage BUT with the option of an SD Expansion slot to allow for a total of 64GB storage. The accessibility of a removable memory card surely adds a benefit to the G-Slate

- iPad runs Apple’s proprietary iOS operating system with the Apple App Store while the G-Slate comes with a supped up Android 3.0 Honey Comb. The OS choice becomes strictly a matter of preference at this stage, because I simply cannot get into the Android vs iOS debate just yet.

So this is the specs comparison in a nutshell. Without a doubt, there is a lot more to be discussed and I would love to get my hands on the G-Slate so I can do a head-to-head comparison, but that will have to wait just a little bit longer. Heck, I might as well just give in and purchase the G-Slate for myself. Oh and that brings me to the last point, the Price… The G-Slate has 3G capabilities so it would be comparable to the 3G version of the iPad 2. The 32GB version of the iPad 2 retails for $729 and the G-Slate goes for…….
You guessed it, $729 !!!

Therefore not only is the G-Slate a worthy competitor in terms of specs, the price is at par with the iPad as well. And given the added bells and whistles of 3D, Android and a subsidized rate of approximately $500 through T-Mobile in the US, this may very well turn out to be a tablet to look out for. Unless iPad 3 comes with 3D, that would be a whole different ball game yet again. I guess we will just have to wait and see....

Sony Ericsson... Not To Be Ignored !!

In the midst of the “Android Craze” and with Samsung and HTC releasing numerous new models at an alarming rate that serve the Smartphone segment, it is very easy to neglect a company that has been doing a very good job in the same segment, yet has somehow managed to fall below the Pakistani market’s radar. If you look past all the glamour of the iPhone, the rebellious appeal of HTC and the Super AMOLEDs of Samsung, you see Sony Ericsson, a company standing strong with a point to prove.

It might be that I am very picky at times when making recommendations to my peers, but it has been more than once that I simply couldn’t see Apple, HTC or Samsung having the perfect fit for what someone needed. And it has been in those instances that I have fallen back to Sony Ericsson to save the day. I cannot seem to pinpoint a specific reason why Sony Ericsson Smartphones has not been one of the top choices of Pakistani users, but perhaps it has fallen victim to the “What’s popular, must be great” fad.

Once you look closely and use one of the Smartphones in Sony Ericsson’s XPERIA lineup, you find yourself looking for reasons why NOT to get one, and believe me these reasons are very few. If there was only one word to sum up what Sony Ericsson develops, it would be “Smooth !!!”. With great build quality, flowing lines, responsive touchscreens and the silky Timescape User Interface, everything about SE’s phones seems to work in harmony. Technology with Sony Ericsson hasn’t taken a back seat either and with features including 8MP Auto-Focus cameras, Big and Bright LED Displays, HD Video recording capabilities and the Integration of “Sony Mobile Bravia Engine” for remarkable video processing, you are sure to be holding a technologically rich device with one of SE’s Smartphones.

So the next time you are out searching for an Android Smartphone, don’t limit your focus by looking only through HTC and Samsung. In fact, when you consider XPERIA phones as a viable option, you will have broadened the horizons by a lot. Quite more often than not, in making a SE XPERIA smartphone purchase, you will be glad you did.

Paki Tech Reviews will be doing full video reviews of many XPERIA phones in the near future but in the mean time here are a few phones in the Sony XPERIA lineup that are worth your consideration:

XPERIA Arc:
Probably my top choice amongst the lineup itself, this may be the flagship of XPERIA. With a beautiful 4.2” screen, Bravia Mobile Engine and HDMI output, this phone is a Multimedia powerhouse. A powerful 1 GHz processor, great camera and “Artistic” body lines, there is very little that you cannot love about this phone.

XPERIA Neo:
Very similar to the Arc in many regards, this model would be a slightly less expensive version. You get all the great hardware and smoothness of the XPERIA Arc, but you compromise with a 3.7” screen (which my no means is small) and the curvy body of XPERIA Arc is omitted.

XPERIA Play:
Playstation anyone??? Well if there was a time you couldn’t put the controller to your Playstation down or you were always glued to your PSP, this phone may bring back that time yet again. Specifically designed using Sony’s expertise in making the hottest selling gaming console, this phone is focused on letting you play high quality video games just like you would on your console. The phone slides out to reveal PSP style control buttons and let you game away. Along with the great gaming capabilities, it doesn’t fall short in any way when it comes to being used a XPERIA Smartphone.

XPERIA X10:
This was one of the first few Android variants in the XPERIA lineup. It supports much of the same hardware including a 1GHz processor, an 8 MP camera and a 4” LED screen to boot. Also a note worth mentioning is that because the X10 has been out for a while now, the price has considerably subsided and this may become a decent and affordable option.
