Not too long ago, all the hype in the world of Smartphones was about touchscreens, it then became a battle for the highest resolution primary camera, then came the duel for bigger and brighter displays and then competition amongst the major manufacturers took a turn towards achieving the highest processor clock speeds. What is interesting however is the fact that the end result of all these battles stuck, because now you hardly consider a Smartphone worthy without a fast processor powering a large touchscreen display that can exhibit the high quality pictures you took from the on-board camera.
The world of tech is fast changing and before I get done writing and posting this, I would already be clouded with doubts about this being out of date. Well, I don’t mean that literally but you do get the point. But as the title suggests, and you probably get the gist by now, this article is about an up and coming development in the world of Smartphones that is bound to send the manufacturers into fierce competition mode once again. The hottest battle to ensue will be the one of DUAL CORE PROCESSORS!!!
As mobile operating systems grow more and more sophisticated, it is expected that their need for more and more powerful processors is bound to grow. In an attempt to exceed the pack, certain manufacturers have started adapting this next generation of mobile processors. It is however notable that more so than the requirements of the software, the new technology is being installed into Smartphones for bragging rights. High-powered, expensive, mammoth touchscreen devices that manufacturers claim may be powerful enough to replace your notebook computers, has become the benchmark for new flagship phones.
Although slowly but surely, almost all major manufacturers will succumb to the market demand and release a dual-core smartphone, there are at this point a handful of manufacturers that have taken the leap. Before we get into a quick overview of what are the available options, here are some side benefits that come strapped along with dual-core processors:
- · Smoother Operation Without Lag
- · Enough Power To Support 1080p Full HD Video Capture
- · True Multitasking
- · On-Board Video Editing
- · More Advanced Apps and Games
- · Future Proofing
- · Bragging Rights
Surely the addition of dual-core processors is not just a marketing ploy; the powerful processors do provide benefits of allowing software to exploit its potential. The software however, just like with computers a few years back, will be playing catch-up to the hardware. It will still be a while before mainstream software is tweaked enough to utilize dual-core processing seamlessly. Despite this drawback, you can rest assured that a dual-core Smartphone won’t become outdated too soon. Here are some of the noteworthy models that are now available:
SAMSUNG GALAXY S II
A successor to the already very good Galaxy S Smartphones, this phone is expected to be released in May, 2011. From what I’ve read and researched, the Galaxy S II will stand to be the top-dog in the dual-core arena. With a supercharged dual-core processor clocked at 1.2Ghz and a full 1 GB of RAM, there will be no shortage of power. Additionally improvements worth mentioning will include an improved version of a 4.3” Super AMOLED screen and a 8MP Camera capable of recording full-HD video as expected. When this phone hits the market, expect a premium price tag, which will eventually come down once more and more competitors start releasing their respective versions.
LG OPTIMUS 2X
LG may not be the top name amongst phone users in Pakistan but credit is to be given where it is due. Even though the Samsung Galaxy S II seems like a more powerful option, the fact remains that it is yet to be released. LG was one of the first movers to release a dual-core phone which it has powered with a ARM Cortex A9 processor. Initial research and reviews reveal that in terms of features, performance and appeal, the LG Optimus 2X is not to be discounted and should be considered a very worthy phone. The price difference between the Galaxy S II and the Optimus 2X should become a factor not to be overlooked. Also if you consider the advancement that LG has shown with its very worthy LG G-Slate 3D tablet (Click Here for Overview), you can expect a very decent phone in the Optimus 2X.
MOTOROLA ATRIX
One of the very first in the arena, Motorola chose to market the Atrix primarily on its processing power. So much so that Motorola has claimed that the ATRIX is powerful enough to be considered a laptop replacement. Motorola even released a Laptop style dock which allowed you to use the processor the Atrix with a regular laptop style keyboard and screen. The phone however has lacked the expected improvements such as a higher resolution camera than its predecessors and still only records video in 720p resolution despite the increased processing power and capability. There may be a possibility of improvements in the latter drawback through software updates but that is still unconfirmed. The phone however still possesses more processing power that most single-core Smartphones out there but the decision of buying one rests solely on the user’s discretion.
