If you carry around a lot of Wi-Fi enabled gadgets, like to always be connected on the go and have a few extra bucks to spare, you’re in luck. Following the trend of Mobile Wi-Fi Hotspots becoming popular in other parts of the world, PTCL just released its own version of a portable Internet Enabled Wi-Fi Device. It’s called the PTCL EVO Wi-Fi Cloud and it breaks the shackles of slow speed, limited access to a single device and removes bandwidth and download limitations.
The device is similar to the PTCL EVO USB Device in the regard that it provides you mobile access to the internet with speeds up to 3.1 Mbps anywhere anytime. Where it differs is that it is also a Wi-Fi router built-in to the same device. This means that now rather than plugging the EVO device into your USB port and having internet access to your single laptop, you can broadcast the same signal to serve up to 5 Wi-Fi enabled devices in range. This means that with the EVO Wi-Fi Cloud, you will essentially have a Wi-Fi Hotspot with you in your pocket all the time.
This may be a great device to have for people on the go and surely a liberating experience, but there are some drawbacks to the service as well. The price is a bag of mixed feelings because the service costs the same as the regular PTCL EVO wireless service, i.e PKR 2000 for unlimited access and speeds up to 3.1Mbps, but the device itself costs much more than the USB Dongle coming in at PKR 6999. Another limitation is that the device can provide a mere 4 hours of usage before it needs recharging. Although at times 4 hours is more than adequate, you seriously have to wonder what happens if you use it extensively and the juice runs out just at the critical moment.
All in all, this device is for the enthusiasts, who absolutely have to be online with all their devices all the time, and like giving the gift of web-access to their peers around them. But if you are an average user who has so far gotten by fine with their measly EDGE connection or a USB Dongle, this won’t be termed a necessary upgrade. I personally am holding off for a little while longer until the price comes down a little or I start making huge chunks of money from this Blog!!!
